What are toolstar® annual licenses

Annual licenses are automatically extended by 1 year and can be canceled up to six weeks before the end. A simple email is enough. During the term you will receive all updates, access to the customer portal, connection services and free support via email and telephone. You can use each license on any number of PCs one after the other.

Product: toolstar®testLX

Does an operating system have to be installed on the PC?

toolstar®testLX is self-booting and therefore independent of the installed operating system. Any operating system or no operating system at all can be installed on the computer under test.

What do I do if there are errors during startup?

Select one of the other entries in the kernel menu.
– Default Kernel
– Failsafe –> if testLX aborts during startup
– Graphics failsafe –> Display error
– Expert mode –> for very new devices

What can I test with toolstar®testLX ?

You can test the entire PC (server, notebook, IPC, tablet, thin client, etc.) and the most important hardware components it contains. These include, among others:
– Processor (units, core, cache test, high load test, ...)
– Mainboard (PCI, Bus-Adapter, BIOS-Komponenten, Live-Hardware-Monitoring, …)
– RAM (7 different tests for RAM, ...)
– Graphics card (test images, visible memory, graphics memory, OpenCL and OpenGL, ...)
– Drives (benchmark, read test, write test, command time analysis, SMART, ...)
– Interfaces (COM, LPT, USB, …)

Can I also have the tests carried out automatically?

Yes, this way you get the maximum benefit. You can create and save various endurance tests by simply clicking together. You can use these endurance tests again and again with one click. This means that any number of tests can be carried out automatically. You can also have a long-term test begin automatically when you start your PC. Then your net time spent on all tests, system information and saved protocols is reduced to less than 3 minutes.
Under Settings - General - Program start & endurance test, activate “Automatically run this endurance test script” and enter the durationname.tts.

Is there a way to create reports?

Yes, you can save each test result as a test report with F2 or have all results saved automatically at the end of the test or permanently. You can save multiple logs at the same time with different settings in .txt, .html, .pdf and .xml formats. For example, a one-page log for your customer and a longer detailed history log for your archive. You can configure the protocols individually according to your specifications, here are 2 examples:

How can I include my logo in the protocol?

Under “Settings – PC and tester info” enter the file name (e.g. logo.jpg) and if necessary, enter the URL and select the placement. The logo is integrated into the html protocol in its original size. In PDF protocols it is resized. For optimal advertising effect, choose a logo file with contact information. 

How can I clearly assign the protocols to the PC or customer?
Can I automatically assign the serial number to test report file names?

You can pre-assign the file name with PC name, PC serial number, MAC address, etc. or enter it manually. You can also find this data in the log. You can also fill 3 free comment fields in the protocol according to your specifications. For example: customer number, inventory number, visual condition, invoice number, mechanical damage, signature, etc.

Where can I save?

On USB pen drives and in network shares. 

How can I save to the network?

In the save dialog (F2) and in the endurance test options, you can also enter a path to a network share in the “File” field. To do this, enter the file name:
Server/Share/Filename.txt or
Username:Password@Server/Share/Filename.txt
All special functions and file formats are also available here. If the server cannot be reached by name, use the IP address. You should enter the user name, password and, if necessary, work group in the testlx.ini with the entries RemoteSaveUser, RemoteSavePass and RemoteSaveWG in the [Options] section, then these will be preset in the save dialog. When saving to the network, you can optionally also have the file saved to the USB stick in the long-term test.

How do I start toolstar®testLX?

You boot directly from a USB stick or DVD.
If the system environment is appropriate, you can also boot via PXE over the network.

I inserted the USB stick and/or DVD and rebooted. The PC still boots into Windows.

Please set the boot order accordingly in the BIOS or use the BIOS boot menu if available. 

The PC cannot boot from a USB stick.

Please boot from DVD, you can also use all functions from DVD.
If the system environment is appropriate, you can also boot via PXE over the network.

Can I see what is installed in the PC?
Is there system information and serial numbers?

Yes, you can access and save detailed system information with the serial numbers. The system information is available in various levels of detail, which you can also customize. 

The drive size shown is significantly smaller than stated by the manufacturer.

toolstar®testLX shows the correct size of the plates. The hard drive manufacturers calculate kilo=1000 instead of 1024, which results in higher nominal sizes. You can set how you want the disk size to be displayed in the settings.

Can I test multiple hard drives at the same time?

Yes, in the endurance test settings you can specify whether the selected hard drives should be tested one after the other or simultaneously. 

Can I also test SSDs?

Yes, you can also use all hard drive tests on SSDs. The mechanics test then corresponds to “distributed access”. 

Can I test the PC, read out all system information, erase the hard drives and log everything in one go?

Yes, you can use the toolstar® shredderLX as a module in toolstar®testLX and then fully automatically test, delete, audit and log everything in detail in the long-term test.

Can the RAM used by the graphics card also be tested?

There are 7 graphics memory tests to choose from in the graphics menu as well as an OpenCL based complete graphics memory test for dedicated and supported graphics cards (AMD, Nvidia, Matrox, etc.)

Can I also use toolstar®testLX with the current (U)EFI BIOS with active SecureBoot ?

Yes, toolstar®testLX also supports UEFI and SecureBoot.

I accidentally deleted the files on my toolstar®testLX stick ,the stick boots no longer.

No problem, you can restore it with an image. In every update email you will find download links to the DVD and USB stick image and the program with which you can easily write it to your toolstar®USB stick.

Which standards are supported for shredding?

Several standards from the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security) as well as various international standards. You also have the option to overwrite with zeros or random numbers or even set your own erasure patterns. 

Can I subsequently check whether the hard drives that have been delivered have been shredded?

Yes, the pattern comparison function is available for this purpose, which you can of course also log. 

I always format the disks and then no data is visible anymore.

You can recover many files from just formatted disks using good data recovery tools such as toolstar®recoveryPRO. After shredding with toolstar®shredder, no data can be restored. 

I will pierce the plate or otherwise mechanically destroy it.

Since 2005, those who place personal data on the market have been personally liable. Suspicion alone can also damage your reputation. In which Windows installations can I use toolstar®testWIN?

From Windows XP to the current Windows 10 and all corresponding server versions (32 and 64 bit). With maximum administrator rights you get the best results.

Do I have to install toolstar®testWIN?

No, just start the *.exe. After closing the program, the PC is as before.

Can I read which drivers are installed?

Yes, you can view and save a list of all installed drivers.

Can I also test productive servers during operation?

Yes, you can specify for each individual test on which CPU it should be executed and with what load (idle to system-critical). This way you can test the server without restricting the customer/user's processes.

How can I test different components at the same time?

In the endurance tests there are tests and groups. All tests in a group are carried out at the same time, the groups one after the other. In this way, you can recreate the problem scenario described by the user during testing and, in particular, find sporadic errors more quickly.

Can I also copy a server with RAID to a disk or image while it is running?

Yes, the server (also PC) is backed up consistently. The copy contains the system state at the beginning of the copy.

Where do I get the updates for my HDClone toolstar® edition?

You can download the latest version at any time at www.nanoways.com using your license key (XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX). When downloading, you can choose between an .exe file for installation or a .zip package with all files (program start, installation, Linux image, finished ISO and manual).

How can I reinstall or update my HDClone stick?

Start the downloaded current HDClone (installed or just the *.exe under Windows). At the bottom right you will see an open-end wrench. If you click here you can update a stick/CD or create a completely new one.

For which media can I use toolstar®recovery?

All hard drives, USB sticks, SSDs, flash media, etc.

I can't find the hard drive in Windows Explorer, can I still save data?

Often yes. If the media is found in Disk Management/Device Manager as a drive of at least 1KB, you should scan it with toolstar®recoveryPRO. If necessary, try it on another PC as well.

Which operating system is supported?

toolstar®recoveryPRO runs from Windows 7 (32/64bit) up to the current Windows 10 and all corresponding server versions.

Which operating systems can I recover data from?

All Windows versions, DOS as well as OS-X, Linux, …. in RAW file scan.

Which file systems are supported?

FAT12/16/32, exFAT, NTFS as well as HFS/ and ext2/3/4 in file type scanning (RAW).

I want to find deleted files, what's the quickest way?

Simply double-click on the partition and click on the “Deleted files only” filter.

The disk has bad sectors and I want to scan again later.

Create a recovery image with toolstar®recoveryPRO. You can then later scan for lost data as often as you like.

Can I see if the disk is faulty?

The smart values ​​(errors that the disk has already documented) are displayed as soon as you click on the drive.

How do I get more information about the record?

If you highlight the hard drive you will see all relevant information on the right. (Name, manufacturer, size, geometry, serial number, firmware, size, bus type, security settings such as set ATA password, SMART status, etc.)

Where can I save the rescued data?

On every drive that you can access on this PC under Windows.

What does “read drive” mean?

This is a quick scan that reads the file system and various tables. After that, you will be shown the file structure as well as existing, deleted and some other lost files.

Are GPT partitions also supported by Windows 8?

Yes, toolstar®recoveryPRO recovers data from both MBR and GPT partitions.

Do I get correct file names or just cryptic strings?

toolstar®recoveryPRO often restores complete directory structures with subdirectories and correct file names. This depends on the damage in each individual case.

Can I also use toolstar®recoveryPRO in RAID?

Yes, toolstar®recoveryPRO also recovers data within RAID 0/1/5.

I don't want to install anything. Can I still work with toolstar®recoveryPRO?

Yes, just start the *.exe, the system will not be changed.

Which smartphones can I test or erase?

All devices with the following operating systems:
– Android 1.5 or later
– iOS (Apple)
– Windows Phone 8
– RIM 4.3 or later (BlackBerry)

Do the devices have to be unlocked?

Yes, the device must be unlocked or the customer must provide the PIN.

How long do I need to completely test a smartphone with a test report?

2 to 4 minutes.

Can the smartphone still be assigned to an account in iCloud or Google?

When testing: Yes
When deleting: No, the assignment must be separated.

Are my licenses expiring?

Yes, the purchased licenses remain valid for 12 months and expire automatically after this period.

Can I work in several locations at the same time with one license?

Yes, it is a cloud solution. You can use it at any number of workplaces and locations.

Is toolstar®mobile shredder certified?

Yes, ADISA, GSMA and A Star Forensics have certified the software.

Do I need special hardware?

No, a normal desktop PC with Intel i5, Windows® 7 or newer, 2 USB controllers and Internet access is sufficient.

Do I need specially trained employees?

No, the software is self-explanatory, a short introduction is enough. The software automatically guides the user through all steps of testing and deletion. The deletion of devices is carried out almost completely automatically.

Can I delete multiple devices at the same time?

Yes, even over 20 smartphones at the same time. Special USB hub and PC specifications are recommended. The limitation for simultaneous devices is due to the hardware to which the devices are connected.

Why should I also wipe a cell phone after resetting it to factory settings?

A simple factory reset or manual wipe does not permanently remove the device's data (as with other storage devices). The documents and images can usually be restored without much effort. Since the GDPR came into force, audit-proof and verifiable deletion has become even more important!

Where are the sanitization certificates and test reports stored?

All results are stored centrally in a dashboard. There you can download the documents directly as PDF, XML or CSV.

How can I evaluate the results?

In the management console you can evaluate and analyze the results of all devices and prepare them as a table or graphically according to various criteria such as time period, model, manufacturer, etc.

How much does it usually cost to delete smartphones in a specialist retailer or repair shop?

Usually between 19 and 39 euros. Prices may vary depending on the intended use of the device (private person, police device, lawyer, etc.) and your customer's order description.

How much do the updates cost?

Nothing, you only pay for the use of the licenses. All license updates and extensions are included in the price and can be downloaded independently from the dashboard.

Can I secure the remote connection and my license?

Yes, you can assign a separate or common password for “View” and “Control” for the VNC connection. You can also protect the license server with a password.

How many copies of toolstar®testLX-Remote can I create and distribute?

As many as you want. At the same time you can test as many PCs as you have licenses.

Can I also work locally with my toolstar®testLX-Remote license?

Yes, the only requirement is an internet connection. Start toolstar®testLX remotely from a USB stick or DVD and all functions are available to you .
If you have assigned a license server password (recommended), enter it again.

Are there any restrictions compared to the USB stick license?

You need internet via LAN. Otherwise, all functions of the USB stick license are available to you without restriction.

What requirements does the remote PC have to meet?

The device must have Internet access via LAN and be able to boot from a USB stick, DVD or PXE.

Is my customers' data safe?

Yes, only the screen, inputs and results are transmitted during the VNC connection. Access to the file system of the remote PC is not possible. You can protect the VNC connection itself with a password (recommended).

I boot with my own copied USB sticks and can't save to them.

If I distribute my toolstar®testLX-Remote to customers, can they use it without my knowledge?

No, not, if you have set or not removed your password for the license server (in the Settings menu).

How do I see which PC has connected to me?

When the VNC viewer window appears, you will see the serial number of the remote PC at the top left.
You can also specify in the settings that the customer is asked to enter their name and company when the program starts. You can also see this information in the VNC viewer window.

How do I get the test logs/erasure certificates from the remote PC?

You can start the file transfer in the VNC viewer window. This way you can transfer protocols, certificates, settings and endurance tests from the remote PC or copy them to it.
On the remote side (right), please double-click on C: and then select the testlx directory.

We have dynamic IPs, can I still use it remotely?

Yes, instead of your IP address, enter your DynDNS address, for example.

Can I also control the connection to the remote PC from a VM?

Yes, a sensible solution, especially if there are several support employees.
