From version 6.20 of toolstar®testLX in conjunction with the current kernel, supported NVIDIA® GPUs a complete output of all information such as device name, serial number, video BIOS version, GSP version and much as well as running all GPU stress tests and full memory tests of the entire available dedicated GPU -Storage. In the program toolstar®testWIN this support through Windows drivers has been available for much longer. The additional Vulkan GPU memory test will be added in one of the next updates.
GPU information
In addition to the previous information from our own PCI database such as name or connection, you will now be provided with the following information for all supported NVIDIA® GPUs displayed:
- Device name
For example NVIDIA®-GeForce RTX 2070 - Brand
For example GeForce - Total memory, currently used and free memory
The total physical memory, the currently used memory from the card itself and the operating system as well as the currently free memory that is available for tests, for example. - Memory bus width
Speed of possible full data transfer to the card - Number of GPU cores
How many cores does the GPU make available for calculations, for example to process images or shaders or to handle parallel computing tasks. - PCIe supported by GPU
The PCIe version supported by the card, such as 3.0. In addition, PCIe maximum on this system, PCIe current and PCIe bus ID. - Board ID
ID of the board used by the card. A number used internally by NVIDIA® without a direct reference to a name or similar. - Architecture
The architecture of the card such as Turing, etc. - Video BIOS Version
The version of the card's currently installed Video BIOS. Can be compared with the one currently available. Updates in this area some PCI Advanced Error -ReportingFix errors/notes. - GSP firmware version
The version of the currently installed GSP firmware - Clock ranges
The current clocks in the graphics, SM, memory and video encoder and decoder areas. with the current clock in MHz and the currently set maximum. - Hardware monitoring

GPU stress test with OpenCL
Run the GPU OpenCL stress tests to load all chips simultaneously and test Load the cards in their current configuration. For more load, it can also be combined with GPU memory tests as well as CPU high load tests and memory tests. The workload should be adapted to the system to achieve optimal results. For more information, see Note on execution times later in the article. A combination of the tests can be used very well to carry out a load and function test, especially on newly assembled devices. For devices that are being examined for possible hardware errors, it makes sense to carry out separate tests in order to keep the load low and to be able to clearly assign errors to a part of the device.
GPU memory test with Vulkan or OpenCL
Test the graphics card's full dedicated GPU memory with different driver implementations (Vulkan (3D graphics and compute workloads) and OpenCL (compute workloads)) and access patterns. This allows you to detect unstable cards and find errors in the memory chips. The running times of the tests must correspond to the requirements profile of the device and should be tailored accordingly. For more information, see Note on execution times later in the article.
Note on integrated GPUs
With integrated CPUs such as Intel GPUs directly in the CPU, it can happen that the OpenCL driver allocates too large an area of the device memory and the testing results in long hangs system leads. In some circumstances it may make sense to only test 90%, for example. Apart from that, only the RAM is tested here, which is better tested with the RAM routines anyway.
Live-Hardware-Monitoring
The values for temperature and fan speeds were added to the Live Hardware Monitoring as well as added voltages for all supported GPUs (as long as the device provides these values. Depending on the card, NVIDIA® more or less sensors have been installed). This means that during the tests you can always see how the card behaves under load in the area of the computing and memory chips. Of course, all values are also recorded and are available in the outputs after the automated tests. There you will find the minimum, maximum and average value of each individual sensor.
Systems with multiple physical GPUs
If you test a gaming or computing system with multiple built-in NVIDIA® GPUs, all of them Graphics cards tested one after the other. You don't need to set anything special. All tests adapt to the available compute and memory chips on the cards and test them optimally. Up to 16 GPUs per manufacturer are currently supported. So you can test up to 16 NVIDIA® GPUs in one system. We are actively working on supporting even more GPUs per system.
How can I use the new information and tests?
No special adjustment is necessary on your side. After you have installed the Update (operating system and program package), you will see The new system is automatically loaded for supported devices and graphics cards and is then available in toolstar®testLX . On unsupported older cards, our fallback is automatically used and you use toolstar®testLX as you do before are used to. But then with the well-known restrictions on the GPU tests.
More options for overclocking and downclocking
By integrating the original NVIDIA® manufacturer tools, you also have the option of reading and testing toolstar®testLX still has the option to configure the cards directly from the toolstar® operating system. This allows you to adjust the maximum clock speeds or configure the maximum energy consumption. You can then check your settings for stability directly with toolstar®testLX. This is possible with the preinstalled application nvidia-smi (System Management Interface). Set persistent settings in the area of power management as well as compute and memory clocks. The program also offers the option of reading out additional values.

Warning:
Setting incompatible or incorrect values can result in the system no longer starting or the card being damaged or unstable due to load after the change. Resetting the values to standard settings is only possible as long as the system with the card is still starting and you have access to the device. Please only use these options if you are sure that the card fully supports these settings.
By default, all current NVIDIA® cards start with the maximum clock rates. This is a good setting for gaming, computing or image editing. However, you have the option, for example, to lower the clock speeds to save power but only have a small performance loss.
Adjusted execution times for optimal results
Graphics cards are very complex and high-performance hardware components. We therefore recommend a longer execution time for the tests in order to include all aspects in the test. These aspects include the thermals, load and running time of the cards. This is the only way you can reliably find memory and calculation errors as well as identify instabilities in the hardware or configuration of the card. A gaming PC doesn't just run for 1 minute and then stop again. The devices must remain online and stable for several hours or, for compute workloads, several days and weeks (depending on the workload). If possible, reflect these scenarios in your test scripts. It should also be taken into account that GPUs calculate and transfer data very quickly. This means that even with a test time of, for example, 10 minutes, you have already transferred and verified hundreds of GB between the host system and the card.
ShredderLX and Suspend-To-Ram
In previous versions it could happen that devices with NVIDIA®- could be woken up again after a sleep. GPUs were not possible, or continuing is not possible due to a black screen. This issue should no longer occur with all supported graphics cards. If this problem persists, it may be necessary to start the operating system with the kernel parameter NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 and thus activate the necessary services at startup. This parameter is only available when using one of the GPUs listed below. In all other cases this is ignored. You specify the parameter in the GRUB menu for each selected kernel.
Boot entries in the GRUB and SYSLINUX menu
The 64-bit default kernel remains the appropriate choice. When starting, this will automatically try to activate the new functions for supported cards and, in the event of problems or unsupported cards, switch back to toolstar® legacy mode in order to start anyway. However, if that doesn't work, you can also select one or the other system to start within the extended start entries.
Currently fully supported GPU model
The GPU models supported at the time of writing can be found in the list below. With each new kernel release, more maps are added where possible. Only cards with the current GSP firmware are supported. Older models automatically use the toolstar* legacy mode and can still be tested. However, with restrictions in the area of NVIDIA® GPU tests. Currently over 730 models are fully supported. Some cards are listed with double names because they have the same name but are internally structured differently. Different core and memory sizes, bus connections or form factors for desktop, server or notebook. There is also the possibility that the drivers also work on cards that are not explicitly listed below. With each kernel update (4 per year), additional current models are supported. These updates are normally included in your update service.
